Day - 3 Tauranga to Kawerau to Rotorua

This morning we’ll head for Comvita Honey Centre, where it’s possible to see inside a bee-hive, learn about apiary and (to be confirmed) and tour the honey factory.

Next is a visit a to paper mill to understand the production of one of our most important daily requirements and the challenge of producing this sustainably.

Norske Skog Tasman processes Radiata Pine timber from the state-owned Kaingaroa Forest. The site was chosen because of the ready availability of energy from an on-site 100-megawatt geothermal power station. Over 500,000 tonnes of paper are produced annually, supplying all New Zealand's newsprint requirements and thirty percent of Australia's.

Next you’ll try blokarting (where sailing meets the speedway). Plan and carry out simple investigations with wind energy themes.

Blokarting is land yachting for all ages and skill levels and the windy summer months find Blokart Heaven humming. With 360 degrees of available wind, karters can sail with any wind direction. Tauranga is the home of the blokart and its inventor.

Overnight Rotorua

Day - 4 Rotorua

Your first stop today, Rotorua Museum provides a great introduction to New Zealand’s culture and volcanic highlights.

You’ll carry out qualitative and quantitative tests on hot spring water in a geothermal field in the centre of Rotorua city to understand how geologists monitor water characteristics as an indication of what is happening below ground.

Next, you’ll explore Waiotapu, one of Rotorua’s most colourful and dramatic geo-thermal parks with its hot pools, bubbling mud and steaming ground. Your guide will help you understand the nature of geothermal activity and its benefits and dangers to the inhabitants of Rotorua
