Bay of Islands and Cape Reinga weekend

Day 1Tauranga and Auckland to Pahia

  • Waitangi Treaty House, historic site of the signing of the treaty that defines New Zealand’s bicultural society.  
  • Ferry ride to Russell. Explore New Zealand’s former capital, once known as  the “Hell Hole of the Pacific”

Day 2: Pahia to Cape Reinga and back  

  • Cape Reinga (northernmost point of New Zealand, dramatic meeting point of the Pacific ocean and Tasman sea and where spirits of the dead, according to Maori tradition, set off for the after-life).







  • Puketi Kauri Forest (Kauri trees can live for 2000 years and, at maturity are the largest trees in the world in terms of the volume of wood they contain).

  • 90 Mile Beach (Not quite as long as the name suggests but beautiful and dramatic just the same and an unusual way to travel along the west coast of Northland.

  • Sand boarding on the giant dunes at Te Paki.







    Overnight Paihia

Day 3: Paihia to Auckland and Tauranga



  • Dolphin watching and optional swimming:  Dolphins are some of the earth's most fascinating creatures and the Bay of Islands is blessed with their presence all year round. The Bay of Islands has the warmest waters in New Zealand, perfect for swimming with dolphins.
  • Drive back to Auckland via Kawa Kawa and see just why its public toilet is world famous (yes it really is)! Then highlights of Whangarei.
